There are two ways to approach food, and when you go too far in either direction you are forced to make sacrifices. For the purposes of this blog post we’ll talk about egg production.
The first approach is what I call, “the idealist” approach. The idealist gathers and washes every egg by hand, keeps a comparatively small number of laying hens on the farm (around 200 or less), and is incredibly inefficient.
The second approach is what I call “the realist” approach. The realist knows that we need to feed the world. We need to do it efficiently, in a way that keeps prices down while paying the farmer, and in a way that reaches the masses without all of them having to drive to the farm to pick up their eggs.
If you go too far towards “idealist” you can only feed a few people and you can throw efficiency out the window. This approach is arguably the best for the chicken though.
